Senior Project Reflection

PART I: Two-Hour Presentation
(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment
I feel I should get an AE on my two hour presentation because I met all the requirements and took it farther than expected. I managed to engage my students throughout my WHOLE presentation and they had a lot of fun. I was very comfortable and confident on what I was talking about.

Why?

(2) What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
What I am most proud of from my two hour presentation is definitely engaging the students into astronomy and knowing the fact that they learn of what it takes to make a successful class. I got a lot of feedback by the juniors and seniors and they loved my presentation. They said that it was different and very creative. I motivated them to actually listen to what I had to say and I was able to teach them how hard astronomy teachers work to help the students.

PART II: Overall Senior Project Experience

(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.
My senior project was my majority focus throughout my senior year. I am honored to say that I mastered mostly every component by getting higher than proficient. Astronomy is a subject I love and I put all my effort on all my work. I took the senior project very serious from the beginning and I never lost focus on it. My research checks, presentations, math, were AE’s. The only component that I feel that I could have done better has to be the I-Search. Even though I got a P on it, I felt that what I said in my two hour presentation was not entirely written on my I-Search paper.

(4) What is your EQ and what is the best answer to your EQ?
EQ: What is the most important quality for a successful astronomy class/ teacher?
Answer: Pedagogy Approaches

(5) How has the last month of culminating events (e.g I-Search, Two-Hour, Exit etc) affected your answer to your EQ? Has it changed? Why or why not?
The last month was really the turn-up for me to get my final three answers. My answers were right, but it was the wording that was wrong. For example, I knew that the most important answer for my EQ was different teaching methods, but there was a better way of saying it that covers the main idea of what I wanted to say, Pedagogy Approaches. Other than the wording, my answers were right.

(6) What suggestions do you have in order to improve the senior project?
An improvement for senior year is to work with the creative expression component because that was something that was really not fully understood by many students. Senior Team has done a wonderful job on dealing with the other components because they are always on task and organized. Every component seemed to be essential for the next component.

(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment

Overall, I have given quality to the Senior Team and to myself by senior project; therefore, I feel I should get an AE. I have accomplished to get an internship and Citrus College. I am still taking three astronomy classes (3 Unit) in the college and teaching the college students. Who knew a high school student would get the chance to take the classes for FREE and TEACH to college students. As well, I have done conferences with astronomy teachers involving/conducting surveys, research, and data of how students are learning. Finally, I was able to be one of the finalists for best science fair projects at i-Poly.

Interpretive
What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing I gained working with Dr. Denise Kaisler at Citrus College is how to teach and the reason behind teaching astronomy. At the beginning of my service learning I thought that teaching was a fairly simple teaching style for teachers to achieve, but it was not like that. It takes a lot of time and effort to come up with an effective lesson plan and teaching style to achieve success. There are too many diversity students in college and it really is a difficult task to teach every single student effectively.
Applied
How did what you did help you answer your EQ? Please explain.
My service learning was one heck of a journey to tell you the truth. An awesome experience that helped me answers my EQ in many ways. First, it helped me understand my essential question and what my focus part was, teaching and learning astronomy. Then, I was able to come up with my three answers (standard objective, assessment matrix, pedagogy approaches) by being in a real astronomy class. I got to experience the daily schedule of an astronomy teacher and the amount of work an astronomy teacher has to do to make the class function. My service learning consisted in attending the class every day and discussing with the professor at the end of class. . We talked about what worked in the lesson, what needs improvement, and how the class went. I did some grading, which helped me see what the students understood and how the teacher was performing. Every day I attended to class there was something new and I really enjoy being here. A great experience that I will always remember.
